So how do facials, peels and resurfacers work?

This category of skin treatments uses natural acids and active ingredients to deeply exfoliate and brighten skin. They stimulate new cell growth and collagen production, leading to fresher, clearer, brighter skin.

By using exfoliators, enzymes and acids, the different ingredients are able to perform at different levels of intensity to target specific problems. Issues that the treatment can aid include pigmentation (caused by aging, sun damage, or superficial scarring), uneven skin tone, acne, wrinkles, and dullness. It can reduce inflammation and breakouts caused by acne, and even tackle dry skin, leaving it hydrated and nourished.

Exfoliator

Chemical exfoliators are the gentlest method of skin rejuvenation. It refreshes the skin by removing dead cells from the top layer of epidermis.

Resurfacer

This is also known as a mild peel, as it is a superficial treatment that uses enzymes and acids to refine and exfoliate the top layer of the skin with no recovery needed.

Skin peel

This does same job as a resurfacer but also penetrates middle to low levels of the skin for stronger, long-lasting results. Skin peels require downtime of up to 10 days after the treatment.

Preparation

At your appointment, a nurse will discuss the best option for your skin. They will ask about the results you want and how many sessions it may take to achieve this. The nurse may also examine your concerns, explain the various treatment plans, and gather medical history details to ensure you receive the best treatment possible.

Procedure

During your treatment, a non-toxic chemical is absorbed by the skin, then an active component is released to work within the skin. This is fine to use even on delicate areas like the lips and eyes. You may experience 5-10 minutes of a burning sensation then a slight stinging which can be soothed by a cold compress. You may need to take pain medication for deeper peels both during or after the treatment.

Aftercare

After the treatment, the recovery process is similar to that of sunburn. There is typically redness followed by scaling, which peels off to reveal new skin underneath after 3-7 days. The improvement in overall complexion is noticeable from the very first skin peel that occurs. Mild peels can be repeated at intervals advised by a practitioner to get the look you want.

Cost

Different treatments vary on price, and are dependent on many factors. You can expect a single skin peel to cost anywhere between £70-£150, or £160 for a course of 3.

Benefits

The benefits of facials, skin peels and resurfacers include rejuvenated skin and even skin texture and tone. The effects of laser hair removal are long term, with a minimum of 60% of hair gone for good, and the remaining hair appearing finer, lighter, and altogether more manageable. The procedure is almost guaranteed to work, as 80-95% of patients see a reduction in hair growth.

Different treatments vary on price, and are dependent on many factors. You can expect a single skin peel to cost anywhere between £70-£150, or £160 for a course of 3.

Facials, peels and resurfacers take on average 30 minutes, and can even be performed on your lunch break! You can get a repeat treatment once every 2-3 weeks until you achieve your desired result. Maintenance peels carried out once a month ensure lasting results.

If you are prone to cold sores preventative medicine may be prescribed for the days prior to treatment.

Glycolic acid is a popular choice, a chemical found naturally in fruits and milk. It is a rapid exfoliator and good especially for dry skin. Salicylic acid is also commonly used particularly to target acne, and it is great for extreme exfoliation.

Some milder peels and resurfacers require little to no downtime. Deeper peels may require bandages on the treated area, and leave the skin looking slightly pink, before it then feels (and looks) like sunburn. It is important to wear a high factor sun cream afterwards to prevent new pigmentation marks, and people are advised not to exfoliate after a treatment, as the skin is fragile.

The great news is that facials, peels and resurfacers have been tested and approved for all skin types and tones. After a few weeks, the skin will appear brighter, clearer, hydrated and smooth. Results can last for months, or even years with good sun protection. The deeper the peel, the longer lasting the brilliant results.

Some patients experience some short-term itching, swelling and redness. These effects can be easily reduced with a cooling lotion or ice pack. You can prevent further side effects by avoiding exposure to sunlight, using SPF and refraining from plucking, waxing or bleaching for two weeks leading up to a session.
