Ingrown Hair

Ingrown hairs are caused when hair follicles grow out of the skin and then curl back, re-entering the skin. The ingrown hair can form when the hair starts growing sideways or the follicle is filled with dead skin. It may look as if you are forming pimples, however, you should be able to see the hair trapped beneath the skin. The area around the ingrown hair may become irritating and itchy but it is best not to pick and scratch at it.

Who does it affect?

Anybody can develop ingrown hairs, however, it is most prominent in men and women with curly hair. This is because the hair will already naturally want to grow in multiple directions. Areas that have been shaved and waxed are usually where people will find ingrown hairs.

How to treat it

The most effective way to treat and prevent ingrown hair is to allow your hairs to grow out. This is best achieved by not having and waxing the areas where your ingrown hairs have developed before. Laser hair removal can prevent hair from growing in an area and ultimately eliminate the possibility of ingrown hairs. Also, if the ingrown hair is visible you could remove it with sterile tweezers. However, you have to ensure that you are not digging too far and opening the area to the possibility of infection.
